Cannabis Budtender Certification


Course Description: Build a strong foundation for a career in the cannabis industry. Learn primary compliance systems, procedures, business styles, and processes for budtending in small or large scale operations. Participants of the budtender Certification will be trained to be lawful, safe, and knowledgeable sales representatives. Students will begin with a base understanding of laws, compliance, and consumer safety. Training will include a thorough overview of proper dosing, safe consumption, packaging, and developing your resume. The course will follow with (2) budtender modules: understanding cannabis products and their effects, followed by product sales and making the right recommendation for customers. Students will also learn the trade secrets to the art of retail cannabis. Upon completion of your course, you will receive a Clover Leaf University Bud-Tender Certification. Your certification is proof of your in-depth knowledge and skills as a bud-tender by the first higher education university approved in the nation. This four-hour course comes with your CLU Budtender Workbook and certification requires passing an exam. This class is available in a classroom setting as well as online.

Module 1: Legislative History - approx 20 minutes
Basic law history and compliance knowledge for cannabis employees:

  • State Laws
  • Courts decide on caregivers: Legal decisions that provide the foundation for the dispensary model
  • The industry pre-2010 
  • Marijuana goes legit
  • Marijuana goes Legal

Module 2: Medical Marijuana Code - approx 30 minutes
The medical marijuana code is the basis for the retail code. As all marijuana codes change and add restrictions, a thorough understanding of the basics is essential for every marijuana industry professional.  This module will cover:

  • Types of medical marijuana/retail marijuana establishments
  • Types of occupational licenses
  • Regulations and responsibilities of each establishment type
  • Responsibilities and civil and criminal liabilities of owners  
  • Responsibilities and civil and criminal liabilities of key employees
  • Responsibilities and civil and criminal liabilities of support employees
  • Acceptable forms of identification
  • Duty to provide patients with information that is in their best interest
  • Diversion prevention
  • Good neighbor best practices

Module 3: Retail Marijuana Code -Required- approx 30 minutes
This module focuses on the key differences between retail marijuana on all the subjects covered in module 2 and the following new provisions:

  • Possession limits
  • Preventing youth diversion
  • Consumer product guardianship
  • Appropriate intake amounts for inexperienced users
  • Driving under the influence prevention
  • (13-66 bill to be added- concentrates at the point of sale)

Module 4: Understanding Cannabis Products and Their Effects - approx 80 minutes
 An experienced budtender must know the history of marijuana strains, and further, how they are shaping the products that are offered in the medical and retail establishments today. This module will ensure that the student has a thorough understanding of the products being offered in the market today so that they may effectively meet the needs of their customers.  

  •  Strain basics - Indica v. Sativa
  • Know your strains – history of popular strains
  • What’s new? New trends in strain creation
  • THC – CBD – understanding the uses to portray to customers
  • Extraction/concentrate products and the resulting differences in effects
  • Edible products and effects
  • Hemp products
  • Positives/Negatives of each consumption method
  • What’s new? Hot products for consumption

Module 5: Product Sales and Making the Recommendations -  approx 60 minutes
The informed consumer is the best consumer. There should be special attention to meeting the customers’ needs with the desired effects to create an excellent relationship between the budtender and the buyers. This module is tailored to make your budtenders a trusted source of information on products.


TRAINING ON PROVIDING CUSTOMERS WITH EDUCATION ABOUT RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION OF EDIBLE MARIJUANA PRODUCTS, WHICH MUST INCLUDE REMINDING PURCHASERS OF THE STANDARD SERVING SIZE OF THC AND THAT THE EFFECTS MAY BE DELAYED BY UP TO TWO HOURS

  • How to gauge a customer’s experience level with cannabis
  • Judging what product is best to recommend
  • Effects/strains tailored for addressing (insomnia, mental stress/PTSD, a variety of pains, etc…)
  • Running a retail operation and how to be a cannabis salesperson
  • Understanding your target markets and how to capture them

Module 6: Review, Discussion, Exam -Required- 40 minutes
This module will begin by challenging students to make product recommendations of their own when presented with a customer needing sales assistance. Can be formatted as role-playing or short answer quiz. This is an opportunity for participants to take a deep dive into specific points where they need or want more clarification or points specifically to their particular role in the industry. A short written exam is taken at the end to ensure retention of the information safety and compliance information.
